Former Student – Valedictorian (PhD) at NUS Commencement on 11 July 2017

My name is Li Xiang. I am currently a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Some 16 years ago in 2001, I came to Singapore and enrolled in the Government School Preparatory Course conducted by Ascensia Academy’s predecessor school, Hua Language Centre. The course was very effective and had prepared me well for the placement assessment tests at the local government secondary schools. Thus, at the end of 2001, I was admitted to the Secondary 3 Express class in Yuhua Secondary School. After passing the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level Examination in 2003, I continued with pre-university education at Anglo-Chinese Junior College and successfully aced the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level Examination in 2005. In July 2006, I joined the National University of Singapore (NUS) as an undergraduate student majoring in Economics. The next four years at NUS had affirmed my aspiration to pursue an academic career. Upon graduating with a Bachelor in Social Sciences (Honours) in 2010, I continued with postgraduate education at NUS, leading to two postgraduate degrees, Master in Social Sciences in 2013 and Doctor of Philosophy (joint degree with King’s College London) in 2017.
Ascensia Academy was indeed the school that had kickstarted my long educational journey. Until today, I can still vividly recall the great people and events back in 2001, which had helped me integrate into Singapore’s education system linguistically, intellectually and socially, and laid the foundation for my later endeavours. My symbiotic relationship with Ascensia Academy and close friendship with the Principal, teachers and classmates have lasted solidly till today and will be treasured in my heart forever.
